Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Sargachhi

Started in 1897 by Swami Akhandananda, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, this is the oldest branch centre of the Ramakrishna Mission.

Activities:

  • A higher secondary school (class 5 to 12).
  • Three junior basic schools (class 1 to 4).
  • A residential Primary Teachers’ Training Institute.
  • Three students’ hostels.
  • Eight coaching centres.
  • Four units of Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa.
  • Two vocational training centres.
  • Three public libraries.
  • A dispensary.
  • A mobile medical unit.
  • Eye, ENT and Medical camps.
  • Welfare activities: Providing milk, educational assistance, pecuniary aid, clothes, blankets and winter garments.
  • Religious activities: Daily worship and observance of the birthdays of the Holy Trio and other spiritual luminaries.
  • Dhanyaganga Krishi Vigyan Kendra: This KVK is aimed at developing the socio-economic condition of the farming community by transfer of technology to farmers. It conducted several training programmes related to agriculture, horticulture, pisciculture, dairy, poultry, animal husbandry, tailoring, etc.
  • Moreover, 466 quintals of seeds, 146 small ruminants (sheep, goats, etc), 4 million fish & spawn fingerlings and 2,54,000 plantation material were distributed, and a total of 4590 water and soil samples were tested.

Sub-centre at Berhampore:
This sub-centre at Berhampore (10 km from Sargachhi) is sanctified by the regular visits of Swami Akhandananda, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.

Activities at Berhampore sub-centre :

  • A students’ home.
  • A public library.
  • Daily prayers, fortnightly Ramnam Sankirtan and religious

Sub-centre at Bairgachhi:
Sevavrata was taken over by the Ramkrishna Mission in 2015 and made a sub-centre of the Sargachhi branch. The sub-centre has since then been known as Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (Sevavrata). Situated 2.5 km from the Sargachhi main centre.

Activities at Bairgachhi sub-centre:

  • A water testing laboratory.
  • Training programmes in carpet weaving, etc.
  • A textile unit for producing cotton and woollen items.
  • A unit for manufacturing and sale of UNICEF-approved, Arsenic-free Nirmal water filters.
