Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, Kolkata

This institution, formerly known as Shishumangal Pratishthan, was started in Kolkata in 1932 on a modest scale as a maternity and child welfare clinic. It gradually developed into a first-grade maternity hospital, and in 1956, into a general hospital.

Activities:

  • General hospital: This 684-bed hospital has all major departments and various special clinics. It has 11 well-equipped modern operation theatres, 24-hour functioning laboratories, radiology dept. and blood bank with blood component separation unit and an emergency department.
  • The school of nursing offered a general nursing & midwifery course.
  • The college of nursing offered BSc (Hons.) nursing course and post-basic BSc nursing course.
  • Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences (a postgraduate medical college and research centre) conducts MD, MS and diploma courses. Also, DRD Tech (Diploma in Radiography Diagnostic Tech.), DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology), and DNEP (Diploma in Neuro Electro Physiology) were offered. Further, undergraduate courses in physiotherapy, critical care technology and operation theatre technology were offered.
  • Publication of the periodical Journal of Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences.
  • Eye camps, medical camps and Blood donation camps.
  • A round-the-clock medical pharmacy and an outlet of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra (for generic medicines).
  • Other essential facilities to serve the low-income sections of society.
