The centre was started in the house where Sri Ramakrishna stayed for 70 days in 1885 before moving to Cossipore. The house is also sanctified by the stay of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. The Ramakrishna Math acquired the house in 2010 and started there a branch under the name Ramakrishna Math (Shyampukur Bati). The branch functioned as a sub-centre of Ramakrishna Math (Balaram Mandir) until 2017 when it was made a full-fledged centre.
