Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (Sevavrata), Bairgachhi

Started in 1897 by Swami Akhandananda, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, this is the oldest branch centre of the Ramakrishna Mission.


Activities:

  1. A higher secondary school (class 5 to 12) for boys.

  2. Three junior basic schools (class 1 to 4).

  3. A residential Primary Teachers’ Training Institute.

  4. Three hostels for students.

  5. Six coaching centres for students.

  6. Eight units of Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa.

  7. Three vocational training centres.

  8. Three public libraries.

  9. An allopathic-cum-homeopathic dispensary with physiotherapy and ayurvedic departments.

  10. A mobile medical unit.

  11. Forty-eight eye camps, forty-four ENT camps and nine general medical camps.

  12. Welfare activities: Providing milk, educational assistance, pecuniary aid, clothes, blankets, and winter garments.

  13. Activities under the Dhanyaganga Krishi Vigyan Kendra of RKMVERI (Deemed University): This KVK is aimed at developing the socio-economic condition of the farming community by transfer of technology to farmers. It conducted 208 training programmes related to agriculture, horticulture, pisciculture, dairy, poultry, animal husbandry, tailoring, etc benefiting farmers and rural youths.


Sub-centre at Berhampore:

This sub-centre at Berhampore (10 km from Sargachhi) is sanctified by the regular visits of Swami Akhandananda, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. It conducts the following activities:

  1. A students’ home.

  2. A public library.


Sub-centre at Bairgachhi :

Sevavrata was taken over by the Ramkrishna Mission in 2015 and made a sub-centre of the Sargachhi branch. The sub-centre has since then been known as ‘Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (Sevavrata)’. Situated 2.5 km from the Sargachhi main centre, it conducts the following activities:

  1. A water testing laboratory.

  2. Training programmes in carpet weaving, etc.

  3. A textile unit for producing cotton and woollen items.

  4. A unit for manufacturing and sale of UNICEF-approved, Arsenic-free Nirmal water filters.
