This multi-campus University, founded under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission, came into existence in July 2005. Declared as deemed-to-be-university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, the University has its head office at Belur and operates through its various ‘off-campus’ faculty centres located at different branch centres of Ramakrishna Mission.

It has chosen the following ‘thrust areas’:

  • Disability Management and Special Education;
  • Integrated Rural Development including Tribal Development;
  • Indian Cultural and Spiritual Heritage and Values Education;
  • Disaster Management including Relief and Rehabilitation;
  • Fundamental Sciences – integrated teaching and research.

Activities:

  • At Belur with 1686 students:
    • Under the School of Indian Heritage:
      • M.Phil., Ph.D and 5-year integrated M.A. courses in Sanskrit Studies;
      • Diploma courses on (a) Essentials of Indian Spiritual Heritage, (b) Bhagavad Gita — Traditional and Modern Interpretations;
      • Certificate course in Yoga, ‘Studies on Swami Vivekananda’, Kathopanishad, Bhagavata, etc.
    • Under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Phil. and Ph.D. in Bengali.
    • Under the School of Mathematical Sciences :
      • Diploma, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science;
      • M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mathematics and Physics.
  • At Coimbatore Mission branch, under the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physical Education, with 450 students:
    • The Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education (FDMSE):
      • B.Ed., M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D. and diploma courses in Special Education (hearing impairment, visual impairment and mental retardation);
      • Diploma in Sign Language,;
      • Diploma in Community-based Rehabilitation;
      • Diploma in Computer Applications for the Disabled.
    • The Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga (FGAPEd&Y):
      • BPEd, MPEd, M.Phil., Ph.D. and Certificate courses in Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education (for the handicapped); and
      • Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Special Olympics (for the mentally retarded), Fitness and Yoga.
  • At Narendrapur branch, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 76 students:
    • The Faculty of Integrated Rural Development and Management (IRDM):
      • M.Sc. in Integrated Rural Development and Management;
      • Postgraduate Diploma in Agro-based Biotechnology.

The Faculty Centre has established state-of-the-art laboratories for Microbiology, Plant Tissue Culture and Molecular Biology.

  • At Ranchi (Morabadi) centre, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 80 students:
    • The Faculty of Integrated Rural and Tribal Development and Management (IRTDM):
      • Five-year Integrated M.Sc. course in Integrated Rural & Tribal Development and Management (IRTDM);
      • One-year Postgraduate Diploma course in Agro-based Biotechnology.
  • At Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre (Kolkata) branch,
    • under the Schools of Indian Heritage, Humanities and Social Sciences and Mathematical Sciences:
      • Doctoral and Post-doctoral Research in Physics-Philosophy Interphase, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Thought, Consciousness Studies, and Translation Studies;
      • M.Phil. and Ph.D. Studies in Bengali.
  • At Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Kolkata, branch:

Certified courses on ‘Functional Sanskrit’ and ‘Some fundamental concepts of Indian Philosophy’ were held with 139 and 38 students respectively.

  • The University has libraries in the headquarters at Belur and at all of the “off-campus Faculty Centres”. In all seven libraries having 47,011 books and 138 periodicals and newspapers were maintained at different faculty centres.
  • Rural development activity by setting up 21 Village Resource Centres (VRCs) under a project called Vivekdisha with the assistance of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) to impart tele-education, tele-medicine services, spiritual heritage programmes for international audience, teachers’ training programmes, values education, creation of book banks and interaction with self-help groups etc in rural areas of West Bengal and Jharkhand. 10,521 people were benefited through this project.
