Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Belur

This multi-campus University, founded under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission, was formally inaugurated on 4 July 2005. Declared as Deemed-to-be-University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, the University has its Head Office at Belur. It runs academic programmes on its Belur main campus as well as at its approved ‘Off-Campus’ Centres located at the Ramakrishna Mission Centres at Coimbatore, Narendrapur, Ranchi (Morabadi) and Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre in Kolkata.

Different courses on the following ‘thrust areas’ are offered by the University through various campuses:

  2. Disability Management and Special  Education,  General & Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, Agriculture & Rural Development—Coimbatore Campus
  3. Agriculture, Integrated Rural & Tribal Development and Management—Ranchi Campus
  4. Agriculture, Integrated Rural Development and Management, Environment & Disaster Management— Narendrapur Campus
  5. Indian Spiritual Heritage including Values Education— Kolkata Campus (Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre)


  1. At Belur with 826 students:
    1. Courses offered:
      1. Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Big Data Analytics.
      2. Integrated M.Phil., Ph.D. and 5-year integrated M.A. courses in Sanskrit Studies.
      3. Certificate courses in Sanskrit (Preliminary, Intermediate and  Advanced),   Yoga,   Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Patanjali Yogasutras, Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, etc.
    2. Two students’ hostel with 149 boys.
    3. A central library with 29,824 books and 47 periodicals and newspapers and four departmental libraries.
    4. A publication department which brought out 2 new titles in Bengali, Sanskrit and English during the year; total number of titles published: 33.
    5. Vivekdisha is an information and communication technology (ICT)–based network of RKMVERI which provides services like online education from secondary to undergraduate level, online teachers’ training, Spiritual Heritage programmes, teachers’ workshops and research programmes, through its multimedia-based interactive online classes, and through its website (https://vivekdisha.in). Currently the number of student has exceeded 16000.

  2. At Coimbatore Mission branch, under the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physical Education:
    1. Courses under the Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education (FDMSE) with 74 students:
      1. Ed., M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D. and  diploma  courses  in Special Education (hearing impairment, visual impairment and mental retardation);
      2. Diploma in Sign Language;
      3. Certificate course in Theatre Arts and Holistic develop- ment (CTAHD) – interdisciplinary part-time course;
      4. Certificate course in Assistive Technology (CCAT) for the people with disabilities – interdisciplinary part-time course.
    2. Courses under the Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga (FGAPEY) with 221 students:
      1. P.Ed., B.P.Ed., B.Sc., M.P.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D. and Certificate courses in Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education; and
      2. Diploma courses in Special Olympics, Fitness, Yoga, etc.
    3. The Faculty of Agricultural Education and Research (FAR) with a four-year B.Sc. course in agriculture (243 students).
    4. Students’ hostels for boys and girls: 302 boys and 22 girls.
    5. A central library with 16,593 books, 334 periodicals and newspapers.
  3. At Narendrapur branch, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development:
    1. Courses with 90 students:
      1. Sc. and Ph.D. in Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD);
      2. Sc. and Ph.D. in Agro-based Biotechnology (AgBT);
      3. M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Environment and Disaster Management;
      4. M.Sc. (Agriculture) in Genetics and Plant Breeding.
    2. A Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), named ‘Sasya Shyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra’, at Arapanch village in South 24 Parganas district, aims at improving the socio-economic condition of the farming community by transfer of technology in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture. It conducted 130 training programmes (4202 participants), 1195 extension activities (30,641 participants).
    3. A central library with 1779 books, 30 periodicals and newspapers.
  4. At Ranchi (Morabadi) centre, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development:
    1. Courses under the Faculty of Integrated Rural and Tribal Development and Management (IRTDM) with 134 students:
      1. Five-year integrated M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development (ARTD);
      2. M.Sc. in Rural Development and Management
      3. Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Development
    2. A central library with 1380 books, 8 periodicals and newspapers.
