Though the Mission started functioning in the island in 1924 with the management of a few schools, the centre in Colombo was formally established in 1930. Swami Sarvarupananda is the swami-incharge of the centre.

Activities of the Mission centre :

  1. A free library and a reading room (with 8000 books and 23
    newspapers and periodicals) and a bookshop.

  1. A Sunday school for children (652 on roll).

  1. An International Cultural Centre with guest rooms, library, etc.

  1. Welfare work such as pecuniary help to the poor, scholarships, and
    educational aids to students, and conducting free monthly medical 
    camps and occasional special medical camps for the poor (1100
    cases treated), spending 42,41,409 Sri Lankan Rupees this year.

  1. Lectures and cultural programmes in the ashrama’s Swami
    Vivekananda Centenary Memorial Hall (one of the biggest
    auditoriums in Colombo) as well as in other parts of the island.

  1. Personality development camps for children from schools all over
    Colombo, and free distribution of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda
    literature to schools and libraries.

  1. Daily worship, weekly classes, fortnightly retreats, occasional
    festivals, and celebration of the birthdays of prophets.



Activities of the City/Town/Sub centre :

  1. Three orphanages with a total of 32 boys and 70 girls.

  1. Three nursery schools with 154 children.

  1. A Sunday school with 359 children.

  1. A healthcare centre, which treated 7680 patients.

  1. Daily worship and weekly congregational prayers.

  1. Occasional classes at Mantivu Lepers’ Asylum, where it
    maintains a temple for the inmates and local villagers.

  1. Relief and welfare work by way of providing school
    stationery, clothes, building materials and financial
    assistance to destitute children and refugees (46,90,696
    Sri Lankan rupees spent this year).
