This multi-campus University, founded under the aegis of
Ramakrishna Mission, came into existence in July 2005. Declared as
deemed-to-be-university by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, the University has its head office at Belur and operates through its various ‘off-campus’ Faculty centres located at different branch centres of Ramakrishna Mission.
It has chosen the following ‘thrust areas’:
1. Disability Management and Special Education
2. Integrated Rural Development including Tribal Development
3. Indian Cultural and Spiritual Heritage and Value Education
4. Disaster Management including Relief and Rehabilitation
5. Fundamental Sciences - integrated teaching and research.
Activities of the Mission centre :
At Belur with 439 students:
a. Under the School of Indian Heritage :
i. MPhil, PhD and 5-year integrated MA courses in Sanskrit Studies,
ii. Diploma courses on (a) Essentials of Indian Spiritual Heritage, (b) Bhagavad-Gita — Traditional and Modern Interpretations,
iii. Certificate course in 'Studies on Swami Vivekananda', Kathopanishad and Adhyatma Ramayana.
b. Under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences MPhil and PhD in Bengali.
c. Under the School of Mathematical Sciences :
i. MSc in Computer Science,
ii. MSc and PhD in Mathematics and Physics.
At Coimbatore Mission branch, under the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physical Education, with 574 students:
a. The Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education (FDMSE) :
i. BEd, MEd, MPhil, PhD and diploma courses in Special Education (hearing impairment, visual impairment and mental retardation)
ii. Diploma in Sign Language,
iii. Diploma in Community-based Rehabilitation,
iv. Diploma in Computer Applications for the Disabled.
b. The Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga (FGAPEd&Y) :
i. BPEd, MPEd, MPhil, PhD and Certificate courses in Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education (for the handicapped), and
ii. Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Special Olympics (for the mentally retarded), Fitness and Yoga.
At Narendrapur branch, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 47 students:
The Faculty of Integrated Rural Development and Management (IRDM) :
i. MSc in Integrated Rural Development and Management,
ii.Postgraduate Diploma in Agro-based Biotechnology.
The Faculty Centre has established state-of-the-art laboratories for Microbiology, Plant Tissue Culture and Molecular Biology.
At Ranchi (Morabadi) centre, under the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 62 students:
The Faculty of Integrated Rural and Tribal Development and Management (IRTDM) :
i. Five-year Integrated MSc course in Integrated Rural & Tribal Development and Management (IRTDM)
ii. One-year Postgraduate Diploma course in Agro-based Biotechnology.
At Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre (Kolkata) branch, under the Schools of Indian Heritage, Humanities and Social Sciences and Mathematical Sciences :
i. Doctoral and Post-doctoral Research in Physics-Philosophy Interphase, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Thought, Consciousness Studies, and Translation Studies,
ii. MPhil and PhD Studies in Bengali.
Rural development activity : VIVEKDISHA, an ICT-based network of the University, is mainly conducting Online education, Teachers’ Training and Workshops, research in education and communication through broadband connectivity and internet services. This site has some special features like:
a) Some old photographs are used in connection with Thakur’s life to have the feelings of Thakur’s time.
b) Cross references of different books related to Thakur and Swamiji have been added.
c) The site is having bilingual nature i.e. English and Bangla.
d) Online Examinations- This site is providing opportunities to students to have practice tests for different subjects at different levels. Moreover, institutions and teachers can set their questions for specific examinations which will be available only on specific date and time of examinations. The questions can be set in English and in any Indian languages. Our schools, colleges and University can take advantages of it.
e) 3600 Studio - providing a panoramic view of a place.
f) Teaching videos- some edited videos of our online classes are available here.
Five libraries having 27,838 books and 77 periodicals and
newspapers were maintained at different faculty centres.
At Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Kolkata branch:
Workshops and courses on 'Functional Sanskrit' and 'Outlines of
Indian Philosophy' were held.
About Twenty academic workshops, seminars and training programmes were conducted during the year.
